Business Bulletin No. 133/2001

Wednesday 19 September 2001

Stage 1 of the Protection of Wild Mammals (Scotland) Bill

The Presiding Officer wishes to remind Members of the arrangements for requesting to speak in debates.

The Presiding Officers always find it helpful to know in advance the likely demand of speakers in debates. This would be especially welcome for the debate on Stage 1 of the Protection of Wild Mammals (Scotland) Bill. Advance requests to speak in debates can be submitted directly to the Business Team, contact: Jane Sutherland, ext. 85187. In addition, party business managers will continue to provide lists of suggested speakers.

Languages Day

Motion S1M-2221 in the name of Irene Oldfather on European Languages Day has been selected for the Members' Business debate on 26 September. The Presiding Officer, in consultation with the Parliamentary Bureau, has agreed that Members who participate in the debate will be able to make short contributions (up to a maximum of 2 minutes) in a language other than English if they so wish. Anyone who does speak in another language should immediately repeat their contribution in English. No simultaneous interpretation will be available for this item of business.

Members wishing to speak in the debate in any language other than English should observe the following procedures.

Requirement to give notice

While it would assist the Presiding Officer and parliamentary staff if a longer period of advance warning were given, Members must give at least 24 hours' notice of their request to speak in a language other than English. They should notify the Business Clerks in the Chamber Office (contact Jane Sutherland ext. 85187 or Diane Barr ext. 85192) of their request, providing the following information:

(a) details of the language in which they wish to speak; and

(b) the estimated length of the address.

Members who would like assistance with translation for this item of business should contact Catherine Johnstone (ext. 85447) not later than Monday 24 September.

Provision of text by Member

The Member should provide copies of the text of their address in both English and the alternative language, preferably in both electronic and paper format, to assist Official Report staff. This material should be made available to the Official Report no later than one hour before the start of the business item during which the address is to be made.
