Petition by Catherine Harper on behalf of Scottish Women Against Pornography, calling for the Scottish Parliament to enact legislation to define pornographic material as incitement to sexual hatred and to make such incitement an offence similar to that of incitement to racial hatred.

Summary:

The Public Petitions Committee considered petition PE752 and agreed to write to the Minister for Justice, the National Group to Address Violence against Women and the Working Group on the Adult Entertainment Industry. The Committee further agreed that the Gender Reporter should meet with the petitioners and report to the Committee on that meeting.  

29 June 2004 :   The Public Petitions Committee agreed to formally refer the petition to the Equal Opportunities Committee for further consideration. 

2 November 2004 :   The Public Petitions Committee considered PE752 by Catherine Harper, on behalf of Scottish Women Against Pornography, and agreed to write to the Justice Committees to identify what relevant work they had undertaken in relation to hate crimes and to request information from the Scottish Executive on its plans following its consultation on hate crimes. The Committee also agreed to request further information from the Scottish Executive in respect of its review of research on possible links between pornography and violence against women and the Gender Reporter agreed to carry out further work on this issue 

3 May 2005 :   The Equal Opportunities Committee considered petition PE752 and agreed to write to the Minister for Justice, the National Group to Address Violence against Women and the Working Group on the Adult Entertainment Industry. The Committee further agreed that the Gender Reporter should meet with the petitioners and report to the Committee on that meeting. 

19 September 2006 :   The Equal Opportunities Committee agreed to take no further action on the petition and to invite the petitioners to respond to the Scottish Executive's consultation on the strategic framework on violence against women. The Committee also agreed to question the Scottish Executive on the issues raised in the petition and to hold an evidence session on the harmfulness of pornography.
